The 3-Band EQ Workflow

Written ByMusic Scientists

Why limiting your tools might be the key to unlocking better mixes.

The constraint

Most EQ problems can be solved with three broad strokes:

  1. Low (weight / cleanup)
  2. Mid (presence / character)
  3. High (air / sheen)

If you can’t solve the mix with these, the issue is usually arrangement or monitoring, not “more bands.”

“Limitation is not a bug in the audio signal path. It is the soul of the record.”

Implementation strategy

  • Load a channel strip on every track.
  • Disable the analyzer.
  • Map the three bands to a physical controller (if you have one).
  • Make decisions fast. Revisit slowly.

Band guide

  • Low band (≈100Hz): weight vs. mud
  • Mid band (≈1.5–3kHz): presence vs. harshness
  • High band (≈10kHz): air vs. hiss

Why it works

A constrained workflow forces you to hear instead of hunt. It reduces decision fatigue and makes your automation choices obvious.
